Directory Printer

Directory Report is a powerful directory printer
The Microsoft Explorer cannot print directories.
Prints the directory tree of an entire disk or a list of directories.
Prints all file attributes you see when you select a file in MS-Explorer, right click and select properties.
Prints .AVI, .DLL, .EXE, .MP3 .MSI, .MSM and .WAV  properties.
Prints to a Printer, Text file, Clipboard, Excel file, Excel program, HTML file or XML file.
Prints every file attribute or pick which ones you want.
Preview the printout before sending it to the printer

Displays and prints Sybase DLL version information
Since many of the Sybase DLLs are in a custom format, their version information is not viewable with the MS Explorer

Easy to use

Its as easy to use as the MS-Windows Explorer since it looks and feels just like the MS-Windows Explorer
Runs on Windows 9x, ME, NT, 2000, XP.
Directory Report is a true WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get)

There are seven windows

  1. Main window. (Screen Shot)
  2. Largest files window (Screen Shot)
  3. Largest directories window(Screen Shot)
  4. Duplicate files window. (Screen Shot)
  5. Duplicate directories window. (Screen Shot)
  6. Directory compare window. (Screen Shot)
  7. Owner file size summary window. (Screen Shot)

All seven windows show every file attribute.
Aside from displaying the file's version information, there is no need to right click any more.

All windows can be sorted by any attribute.
MS-Explorer doesn't allow you to sort by creation date or access date only by modification date.
Since MS-Explorer doesn't compute directory sizes, you can't sort directories by size.

All windows display the folder's size

To view the size of a folder using the MS Explorer you have to right click and choose properties
After a few folders, right clicking becomes very annoying
With the Directory Report program, you never have to right click anymore

This simple feature shows where all of your disk space is going
A must have feature for those who don't have gigs of free space available.

All sizes are shown as the number of bytes and all sizes are separated by commas.
There is no need to right click any more to get a file's true size.
You never have to be annoyed by trying to figure out if a number is 100 thousand or 1 million.

Duplicate Files

Directory Report has everything a single function duplicate file finder tool has.
You can search for duplicate files based on any combination of size, name, CRC checksum or comparing byte by byte
(Screen Shot)

The Directory Report program uses a multiple pass searching algorithm that quickly eliminates possible duplicates.
The actual comparison uses multiple threads to be as fast as possible.

The duplicate file feature has been extensively tested on network drives containing over 450,000 files and 140 gigabytes.
The new colored duplicate file groups make the output easy to process.

What sets Directory Report apart from all other duplicate file finding programs
Is that when you find a duplicate file - you might not know where it is coming from.
Just right click the file and select: Display in Main Window
The file is displayed with all the other files in its folder - Just like the MS Explorer
This way you will be more confident that it is safe to delete it

Duplicate Directories

Searches for duplicate directories can be based on any combination of size, name, total files and CRC checksum.
(Screen Shot)

Auto Find Duplicate Files

You can automatically search for duplicate files and directories after scanning files is finished
To turn on this feature select menu:
Duplicates / Auto Print Duplicates

Selecting files in each group

There might be thousands of duplicates found
To help you in automatically selecting which files to keep, select menu:
Duplicates / Select files in each duplicate group
(Screen Shot)

Multiple File Rename

Directory Report has everything a single function file rename tool has.
With the multiple file rename capability you can rename these files all at once instead of one at a time
(Screen Shot)

From To
abc.jpeg JaneDoe1.jpg
xhi.jpeg JaneDoe2.jpg
sss.jpeg JaneDoe3.jpg

You can change the text of the front of the file and to the file extension.
Rename files based on MP3 tags (Screen Shot)
Change the front and file extension.
Use regular expressions.
Preview the renamed files.

Multiple File Change Date

You can modify the creation, access and modification dates of one or many files.
This feature is great for those of you who are developing scripts that are date sensitive.
This feature is also useful for correcting files with dates in the future or prehistoric dates.
(Screen Shot)

Directory Compare

Every window allows you to choose two directories for comparison. (Screen shot)
This screen is printable.
You can filter the display by showing only:
Files that are different
Files that are identical
Files that are unique to one directory

File Compare

Every  window allows you to choose two files for comparison. (Screen shot)
This screen is printable.

Side by side viewing of file properties

Every window allows you to choose two files to view their properties side-by-side.
This is great for comparing DLLs or EXEs
(Screen shot)

There are three comparison modes:
1. Side by Side
2. Side by Side (Ignore leading and trailing blanks)
3. Binary: compares each file byte by byte and reports the byte number at which the files differ.

File Owner

An optional file owner column is added to all windows.
All windows can be sorted by the file's owner.
The file's owner can be printed in all reports.

Ever wonder who the space hog is on your network?
You can now calculate the size of all files by file owner. (Screen Shot)
This screen is activated by the menu items:
Largest / Compute Largest Owner
Largest / Display Largest Owner

Ever wonder where are all the files owned by a certain user?
Just open the "Largest Files" window and sort by file owner. (Screen Shot)

Multiple File Change Owner

You can change the ownership of one or many files by:
Right click and select from the popup menu: Change Owner

The change owner feature is fully integrated into Directory Report
It will update all totals in the "Compute Largest Owner" screen

File and Directory Cyclic Redundancy Checksum (CRC)

The CRC checksum algorithm is used by many programs (such as FTP, WinZip) to verify if two files are identical.
The CRC32 algorithm is used.
It passes each byte of the file through the CRC checksum formula and generates a unique 32 bit number.
Any change, no matter how small, will generate a different CRC checksum.

There are two directory CRCs shown
1 - CRC checksum of all files in all subdirectories
2 - CRC checksum of just the files in that subdirectory.
The directory CRC checksum can quickly show you if two directories are identical.

Best of all, you can use the CRC checksum feature to check if two files on two computers are identical.
Even if the two computers are not on the same network.
Run Directory Report on computer 1 with CRC checksum on
Run Directory Report on computer 2 with CRC checksum on
If the CRCs are identical then the files are identical.

Bulk Copying

When you use the MS Explorer to copy files/directories, it only shows you the progress of the current file.  This can be real painful when copying a huge amount of files (IE: a CD), especially when you are copying them over a network or slow medium.  The MS Explorer's estimated time to complete is very inaccurate.  You have no idea on how long a copy will take.
(Screen Shot)

The copy_to feature shows you three progress controls:
The progress of the total number of bytes
The progress of the total number of files
The progress of the number of bytes of the current file

The copy_to's estimated time to complete is constantly recomputed

Filters

You can narrow the files scanned by filtering any combination of the following Screen Shot

Minimum / maximum creation date.
Minimum / maximum access date.
Minimum / maximum modification date.
Minimum / maximum size.
One or many file name matching wildcards.
One or many file name exclude wildcards.
One or many directory exclusions.
Date mismatch - creation date > (access date or modification date).
Any dates = zero.  MS-Explorer displays this date as "(unknown)".
NTFS Streams
File is a system file
File is compressed
One or many file owner matching wildcards
One or many file owner exclude wildcards

NTFS streams

The NTFS file system has a new feature called streams
All files have an unnamed stream
This unnamed stream's attributes are what you see with the MS Explorer
The MS Explorer is incapable of displaying any the file's streams
Thus a file can have a 100 megabyte stream and you won't even know it

With the Directory Report program you can:

Set a filter to only scan for files that have streams
All stream attributes are displayed
All streams are displayed with a special icon to make them stand out (a water faucet)
Display the stream's CRC
You can save each stream as a separate regular file

To create a stream:

Create a file my_stream.txt (2 bytes in size)
Enter: dir > my_stream.txt:a
Enter: dir > my_stream.txt:b

To view a stream:

Enter: more < my_stream.txt:a

The MS Explorer:
Is incapable of displaying any of the file's streams
Only shows the file's size as 2 bytes

Saving program settings to a file

You can load and save all program settings to/from a file

Running from DOS command line

You can run Directory Report from a DOS command prompt followed by a settings file.
Thus you can schedule Directory Report to run overnight when the network is free.
This feature requires that you enclose the full path of the wDirReport.exe and the settings file in double quotes.

Automatically running with a saved settings file

Edit your shortcut properties to run Directory Report followed by the full path to your settings file

AutoPrint features

The main screen has a command: Print / AutoPrint
If set, this will automatically print all files in all directories to a file after all files are scanned.
This command is designed to be used when running Directory Report on the command line
